THE COUNTRY HISTORICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL ALMANAC
This Almanac begins with the land  (didn't we always start there?)  and its natural resources, then describes its people's livelihood from these resources, moves into the environmental problems from these activities, and begins to describe the continuum from ancient history to current politics of each of the countries in the world.   Click on a country to display its history.   The country's major languages will appear as buttons below the history.   Click the local language you wish to hear.   The pop-up menus next to these language buttons let you choose from all of the available languages.   Choose a sentence from the menu below the map.

Population:    the most recent figure from the United Nations
Area:    in square miles
GNP:    Gross National Product in US dollars
GNP per capita:    GNP divided by Population, in US dollars
Literacy:    percentage of the adult population that can read
Birth Rate per Thousand:    number of births per year for each 1000 people
Infant Mortality per Thousand:    number of infant deaths per 1000 infants
Ethnicity:    largest ethnic groups comprising the country's population
Languages:    most widely spoken languages
Geography:    a thumbnail description of the terrain
Government:    general classification
